The deep sand covers over most of the area and it greatly affects the vegetation that grows there. Shallow-rooted plants cannot survive on a perennial basis, although annuals that grow rapidly after a good shower may be able to sow seeds that will endure until the next rainy season.
Trees with roots deep enough to reach permanently moist sand levels do very well in the desert. The southwestern Kalahari, with its very low precipitation, it has a few trees or large bushes, scattered shrubs and short grasses. The central Kalahari has more rain and has scattered trees (several species of Acacia) and a small amount of shrubs and grasses. The kalahari desert takes its name from a local Tswana word meaning "the great thirst.
The plants that do the best in the Kalahari Desert is the smaller
plants such as grasses or the flowering Devil's Claw, they have tubers or corms
that remain underground and that enables the plant to flourish when water is
available.Larger plants such as the Camel thorn and the Black thorn (both species of
acacia) have adapted to the climate. As so as the Hoodia Cactus with its ability to store moisture.
There is a northern ,Central and southwestern kalahari and they all have different plants and climates.
The South Western -
has very low precipitation and has has few trees or large bushes—only scattered shrubs and short grasses.
The Central - The Central has more rain, scattered trees (several species of Acacia) and small
shrubs and grasses.
The Northern - The Northern does not look like a desert at all it has open woodlands, palm trees , thorn bushes and forests of both evergreen and deciduous trees that grow to 50 feet tall. One of the largest and most unusual of all these trees
is the baobab. The Okavango Swamp supports a growth of reeds, papyrus,
pond lilies, and other water living plants.
